Managing director (Closed)

Hilltop Recruiting has been retained to assist the Abundance Network in finding a Managing Director with proven operational skills to help them refine & scale their chapter-based civic membership model in pursuit of their extraordinary goals. Abundance Network (AN) is an ambitious project to catalyze a national “Abundance Movement” based on the ideas of Ezra Klein and others, to update the American social contract for the 21st Century.

Over the past two years AN has built a donor network of 160 members collectively contributing $5m+ per year to reform blue state liberalism, leading to outcomes such as: (1) the election of a new Speaker in the CA Assembly (2) keeping the nuclear power plant Diablo Canyon open (3) passing significant state legislation & budget items in the areas of housing (e.g. AB 2011, AB 2097) and decarbonization ($1.4bn in incentives & subsidies) (4) starting the first municipal Abundance chapter, in San Francisco, CA. You can read more about their worldview here: Blog.

This is a unique opportunity for an entrepreneur passionate about government and public policy. Whether you have a history in nonprofits or are for the first time ready to make the transition from the private sector because of your deep resolve for public problem solving and AN’s specific manifesto, we encourage you to consider this exceptional opportunity. We alternatively would love to network with you about this role.

About The Position

The Managing Director will be responsible for refining & scaling the Abundance Network membership model. This role is equal parts creation & execution, as the model to date will need to be adapted to local contexts and there is still a ton of learning and iteration to do. As Managing Director, you will report directly to AN founders Misha Chellam Bio and Zack Rosen Bio, and will be a part of key strategic decision-making.

 In this role, you will:

  • Identify & super-serve the next 2-3 cities — Taking learnings from San Francisco, you’ll help leaders in 2-3 other cities scale up their operations, adjusting the model based on local conditions and incorporating learnings into our scaling plans.

  • Scale to a broader set of cities — After we’ve learned across an initial set of chapters, we’ll open up the aperture to support a growing set of local (& potentially state) chapters.

  • Communicate the model to external audiences — Once we’ve got conviction on scaling broadly, we’ll want to increase demand by communicating our work broadly. If you want, you’ll be one of the faces of this public communication.

  • Co-hold philanthropic relationships — While the model will be principally locally-funded, centralized functions can be subsidized by long term aligned philanthropic funding. You’ll help to build and hold these philanthropic relationships.

 Experience

  • Accustomed to building organization and process around new initiatives and scaling appropriately.

  • Going from zero to 1 on a project independently (entrepreneurial experience).

  • Curiosity to learn about new spaces and unfamiliar territory.

  • Distill amorphous plans into concrete action items & priorities.

  • Deep bias for action. Repeated spark plug, you will things into existence.
